New Triathlon Course Record Set
Rusty Pruden “Sprints” to Victory
Nearly 2,000 participants took part in the 10th annual Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair, Sunday morning at Seward Park. Rusty Pruden captured the 2010 crown with a course-record fifty-seven minutes and five-seconds (57:05) while Kimberly Pancoast (1:05.21) walked away with the women’s championship.
The 2010 Kids Triathlon also attracted more than 350 future competitors. Beginning in 2002, the kids triathlon has grown from a mere 50 participants to its current level. All “mini-triathletes” received a medal and t-shirt.
Tallying a 10:20 ½-mile swim and a 28:36 12-mile bike, Pruden poured it on in the final two-hundred meters of the 5K (16:19), to narrowly grab the course record by eight seconds. Ben Collins set the previous course record in 2007 with a :57:13, but was unable to participate in the 2010 event because of a racing conflict in Germany.
Pruden recently placed second in the 2010 Wildflower Olympic Triathlon (2:05.39) and grabbed first in the 2010 Blue Lake Olympic Triathlon (1:53.54).
The Seafair “sprint distance” triathlon features a ½-mile swim, 12-mile bike and 3.1-mile run.
